Tata Power Delhi Distribution Ltd. presents hackathon, named “INNO-THON”, in association with India Smart Grid Forum (ISGF) and Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology (NSIT). Inno-thon will provide a platform for young minds to prototype their ideas, to innovate and find solutions of problems specific to Power sector in India. Participants will get a chance to showcase their products at India Smart Grid Week 2016 where India’s leading Electric Utilities, Policy Makers, Regulators, Investors and world’s top-notch Smart Grid and Smart City Experts and Researchers will come together to discuss trends, share best practices and next generation technologies and products.

APP-A-THON

With more and more Information Technology being infused in the electricity grid, the reliance on software applications for seamless operation of the power sector is ever-increasing. Utilities and customers are becoming more inclined towards using smart phone apps and hence remain always connected to the events. Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited in association with India Smart Grid Forum (ISGF) is pleased to announce an APP-A-THON as part of India Smart Grid Week (ISGW) 2016 for developing innovative apps for Smart Grid and Smart City applications.

Challenge: To create a smart phone App that will be useful for electric, water and gas utilities and their customers, smart city administration, transport, security, health, sanitation, education etc.

Prize: Winner gets an award of INR 1,00,000 and certificate for championing the event. First and Second-runners up will get INR 60,000 and INR 40,000, respectively. Five consolation prizes will also be awarded, each worth INR 10,000. All participants will receive a Certificate of Participation.

Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited, India Smart Grid Forum and NSIT, Delhi

Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited is a joint venture between Tata Power and the Government of NCT of Delhi with the majority stake being held by Tata Power (51%). Tata Power-DDL distributes electricity in North & North West parts of Delhi and serves a populace of 6 million. Tata Power-DDL has been the frontrunner in implementing power distribution reforms in the capital city and is acknowledged for its consumer friendly practices. Tata Power-DDL has to its credit several firsts in Delhi: SCADA controlled Grid Stations, Automatic Meter Reading, GSM based Street Lighting system, SMS based Fault Management System, etc. Tata Power-DDL has also embarked on its Smart Grid Journey and has become the first utility to initiate Automated Metering Infrastructure based Auto Demand Response program in the country.

India Smart Grid Forum (ISGF) is a Public Private Partnership initiative of Ministry of Power (MoP), Government of India for accelerated development of smart grid technologies in the Indian power sector. Mandate of ISGF is to advise government on policies and programs for promotion of Smart Grids in India, work with national and international agencies in standards development and to help utilities, regulators and the Industry in technology selection, training and capacity building. ISGF has over 200 members covering ministries, government institutions, regulators, utilities, technology companies, non-profit organizations, educational and research institutions and students from renowned institutes.

An Autonomous Institution under Govt. of NCT of Delhi and affiliated to University of Delhi, Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology is a seat of higher technical education in India. It was established in the year 1983 as Delhi Institute of Technology with the objective of meeting the growing demands of manpower in the emerging fields of engineering and technology with a close social and industrial interface. Over a period of time, the institute has carved a niche for itself, both nationally and internationally, for excellence in technical education and research.

India Smart Grid Forum (ISGF) & NSIT along with TATA Power-DDL, as a host utility, is organizing the second edition of India Smart Grid Week (ISGW), a Conference cum Exhibition on Smart Grids and Smart Cities, from 15th-19th March 2016 at Manekshaw Centre, Dhaula Kuan, New Delhi, India.

Competition Details

The Inno-thon and App-a-thon would be comprising of three stages

1. Online Submission

A 48 hour Hackathon would be organized

A 48 hour event would be organized at Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology, Dwarka, Delhi, where the teams would be given all the hardware and software to convert their ideas into a prototype or apps. Selected teams would be invited to present their ideas at ISGW 2016.

2. Development Stage

11th March 2016 - 13th March 2016

A presentation of the developed prototype at ISGW 2016

Top 8 teams will get exhibition space at ISGW 2016 to showcase their model, and the prize distribution ceremony will be held on 17th March at Le Méridien, Janpath, New Delhi.

Frequently Asked Questions

You’ll work in a team of 1-4 hackers to develop a prototype as a solution to the pre – decided themes. We’ll provide you with a bunch of prototyping resources and lots of food to keep you fueled.

The first round would be an online submission of the solution which you are proposing. The top 30 teams would be called to Delhi to develop their prototype in 48 hour time period. The top 10 teams would be invited to present their developed prototypes in the India Smart Grid Week which would be attended by the who’s who of the Power Industry.

Everyone is welcome to participate in the event. It doesn’t matter to us if you are an undergraduate or a working professional or you are a member of a startup or a well-established company. All we are looking for are people who are passionate about creating something new.

The registration fee for a single entry is INR 999, and for a team of 2 persons (or maximum 4 persons) is INR 2500.

We would not be able to provide travel reimbursements, but we would be providing accommodation and food facilities for the entire 48 hours.

You can participate in the event as a lone wolf or can have a team with as much as 4 members. Don’t worry, even if you are alone, people would be present to guide you.

Everything from a 3D printer to resistor would be provided to you so that you can develop your idea into a feasible prototype. A mail would be sent to each of the selected teams asking for the hardware which would be required by them.

All you need to bring with you is your laptop and an open mind.

Absolutely! This is the perfect platform for a beginner to experience the pains and joys of developing a hardware product. Mentors and other experienced participants would be always present to give you valuable advice and guidance.
