Special Electricity Court convicts & penalizes power thief with 6 Months Imprisonment, Civil Liability of Rs. 2.26 lakhs & Rs.10,000 fineDate : Sep 09, 2019

The Hon'ble Special Electricity Court in Rohini, Delhi has convicted and penalized a power thief named Devender, resident of House No. 89, Gaddi Panda, Main Gali, Village Jaunti, Bawana, Delhi with 6 months of imprisonment and Rs.10,000/- as fine post finding him guilty for the direct theft of electricity from Tata Power-DDL's pole using illegal wires.

Accordingly, civil liability assess bill of Rs. 2, 26, 000/- has been approved by the court for the electricity theft that Tata Power-DDL would recover from the convicted consumer. Order was passed by Shri Sunil Rana, Hon'ble Additional Sessions Judge (Electricity), District North West, Rohini.

Tata Power Delhi Distribution has hailed the Hon'ble Court's decision and believes strict fines and punishments would help in setting examples for other defaulters to not involve in electricity theft.

Commenting on the incident, Mr. Sanjay Banga, CEO, Tata Power-DDL said, "We at Tata Power Delhi Distribution work diligently towards providing our consumers with 24x7 power supply but at the same time have to bear the brunt of electricity theft with hampers our services. We believe unscrupulous consumers who indulge in power theft should be dealt with the highest level of strictness. I appeal to all the consumers to take legitimate electricity connections and pay their bills on time for availing uninterrupted power supply."

Tata Power Delhi Distribution is working on methods to curb the AT&C (Aggregate Technical and Commercial) losses in power theft prone areas and control the menace that has escalated in the recent times with strict measure. Tata Power-DDL is now keeping a close watch on the violators. The company is employing technology to track power theft and has installed AMR (Automated Meter Reading) based energy systems at distribution transformers for accurate readings.
