Tata Power-DDL Collaborates with Enedis, Schneider Electric, Odit-e & VaasaETT to Implement Smart Grid DemonstratorDate : Mar 15, 2019

  • Project will lead to maximization of local consumption of Renewable Energy; support Demand Side Management & N-1 Supply through islanding capability of microgrid
  • European Commission Provides €7.9 Million Grant for the Project
  • The overall project budget is €10.7 million with a grant from the European Commission of €7.9 million

Tata Power Delhi Distribution (Tata Power-DDL), the pioneer in power distribution in India has joined hands with Enedis, Schneider Electric, Odit-e and VaasaETT to implement a Smart Grid Demonstrator in India.

The MoU for the same was signed between Mr. Sanjay Banga, CEO, Tata Power-DDL; Mr. Philippe Monloubou, Chairman of Management Board, Enedis; Mr. Luc Remont, Executive Vice President International Operations, Schneider Electric; Mr. Philippe Deschamps, CEO, Odit-E and Mr. Thomas N. Mikkelsen, Partner and Director of Consultancy, Vaasaett on the sidelines of India Smart Utility Week 2019 in the august presence of Mr. Tomasz Kozlowski, H.E. EU Ambassador to India; Mr. Jean-Marc FENET, Minister-Counsellor for Economic Affairs, Head of the Regional Economic Department at the Embassy of France in India; Ms. Megan Richards, Director of DG Energy at the European Commission and Mr. Praveer Sinha, CEO & MD, Tata Power during the India Smart Utility Week 2019 at the Manekshaw Centre, New Delhi.

The Smart Grid Demonstrator will implement the three use cases on dedicated sections of Tata Power-DDL distribution network which include maximising local consumption of Renewable Energy Sources generation, boosting the consumption of local energy with an adapted Demand Side Management and improving the resilience of the local energy system through islanding capability of the microgrid in case of an outage occurring within the area.

The project is planned to start in May 2019 and is expected to complete by October 2022. The overall project budget is €10.7 million with a grant from the European Commission of €7.9 million

Through the collaboration, 15 partners from 8 European Countries (including Distribution System Operators, Industrial and Research Centres) and Tata Power-DDL from India will be joining forces in IELECTRIX (Indian and European Local Energy CommuniTies for Renewable Integration and Energy Transition) with IT-based, innovative product and solution providers, and technology and research centres to demonstrate innovative concepts for network flexibilization. These measures include the demonstration of the potential of mobile storage concepts as well as numerous scenarios for the optimal integration of decentralized renewable energy sources. In this project, the eco-energy country also serves as a pilot region, where different applications and scenarios are demonstrated.

“The collaboration with Enedis, Schneider Electric, Odit-e and VaasaETT is one of the significant milestones in the Indian power sector,” said Mr. Praveer Sinha, CEO and Managing Director of Tata Power. “The Indian Smart Grid Demonstrator will prove to be a game changer for the Indian Grids by maximising local consumption of Renewable Energy Sources Generation, adapted Demand Side Management and improving resilience of local energy system.”

“At Tata Power-DDL, we continually strive to integrate new technologies for strengthening our network to provide reliable and quality power supply to our consumers,” said Mr. Sanjay Banga, CEO of Tata Power-DDL. “The model Indian Smart Grid Demonstrator will address our key challenges in the areas of adapted Demand Side Management, system resilience and more consumption of renewable energy sources.”

The signing in of this agreement is a decisive step, and a strong symbol of the specificity of a European project based on international cooperation with Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited and the realization of a smart grid demonstrator in India. Apart from this four more demonstrators are planned in Germany, Austria and Hungary as part of the project.
