Monitoring and Control

Monitoring and Control

In order to manage our increasingly complex networks and to make them as efficient as possible, we are developing a range of sophisticated ways to capture and analyze the data they produce. These enable us to coordinate with other elements of the electricity infrastructure and to optimize the available resources to provide a cost-effective, environmentally friendly power supply to our customers.

Advanced Distribution Management System

Tata Power-DDL is the first utility in India to implement Advanced Distribution Management System. ADMS is an integrated platform for control of real-time operations, supervision, analysis. It is fully integrated with GIS.

Features of ADMS:

  • Automated Power Restoration System - APRS is an advanced algorithmic approach deployed in ADMS. In case of any supply outage, said system gets invoked automatically and uses signals received from the network to locate a fault on its own. It then automatically executes a sequence of network switching to isolate the fault and restore power to the rest of the network. This enables the restoration of the majority of the consumers within the minimum possible time.
  • Integrated Volt-Var Control – IVVC recommends an optimized set of network switching to achieve greater efficiency in the distribution network. It calculates the predicted values of voltage, active and reactive power, and power factor for a given network. It thereupon suggests a set of network switching for bringing these values within desired limits. In this manner, it assists in meeting various important objectives like minimizing real power losses, maintaining the voltage profile of the network etc.
  • Group Tele-Control – GTC facilitates automated controlling of large set of network devices. It comes handy while managing the demand-supply equilibrium to maintain grid discipline.
  • Single platform used by Distribution Network Operators (DNOs), Dispatchers, Planning Engineers, Reliability Analysts and Managers.
  • Situational Intelligence provides efficient reliable grid analysis and management during changing network state.
  • Future ready with integration of Rooftop Solar Generation through DERMS System.

Geographical Information System

GIS is a foundational technology as it is a single source of data for network and asset installed with specifications on geospatial and works as the primary layer for leveraging other Solutions like- ADMS, CRM, FFA, etc.

Constituents of GIS at Tata Power-DDL:

  • EHV Network – Route details of 66KV /33 KV Network from Source Grid to TPDDL Grid Station
  • Grid Internal – Single line diagram of Electrical Connectivity within Grid Internal
  • HT Network – Route details of 11 KV cable and conductor and location of Substation and connectivity details
  • LT Network – Route details of 440 V cable and conductor and location of Poles/feeder pillars and connectivity details
  • Consumer Mapping – Details of consumers up to LV level and location of asset and their connectivity

Field Force Automation

Field Force Automation (FFA) helps in Crew and Resourcing Monitoring. It helps in auto assigning the complaints to the available crew and helps in R&M cost optimization.

Benefits of FFA at Tata Power-DDL:

  • Auto Scheduling & Dispatching of Work Orders/Calls based on the proximity of crews with event site
  • Auto Demand note generation based on integration of FFA & GIS
  • Offline mode for capturing site details, even in areas without mobile network
  • Real-time Augmented 3D view of underground high power cable network
  • Crew feedback, network condition, customer satisfaction measured real time

Integrated Network Management System

Tata Power-DDL has implemented a centralized monitoring system of grid OT devices on real-time basis. IED (Intelligent electronic devices) communicates through TCP/IP link to a central platform where IED signal analysis is being done.

Security Information & Event Management

Security Information & Event Management (SIEM) is a tool used for real-time analysis of security alerts generated by applications and network hardware.

24X7 Cyber Security Control Room

Tata Power-DDL has a 24X7 Cyber Security Control Room for monitoring of IT & OT network events to identify the threats that could pose a risk of compromise. Continuous monitoring paired with alert response feeds have taken security detection and response capabilities to the next level. A 24×7 cyber security monitoring service helps us overcome significant challenges in our network security.

Supply Reliability Tracking Mechanism

  • Real-Time dashboards for monitoring reliability indices at the senior leadership level.
  • Tracking of reliability indices specific to various segments of consumers being served, high-impacting network branches, etc.
  • Preparation of detailed reliability reports and sharing with all involved stakeholders on a monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, and on annual basis.
